How to Repair a Sagging or Damaged Gate

A gate that drags, drops or no longer closes properly may be caused by loose hinges, weak posts, damaged timber or incorrect bracing. This guide explains how to identify the problem, carry out common repairs and decide when replacement is the better option.

Assessing the Problem

Before starting any repair, identify what is causing the gate to drop, drag or stop closing properly.

Common causes include:

  • Loose hinge fixings
  • Hinges that are too small
  • A weak or moving hanging post
  • Rotten timber
  • A split gate frame
  • Incorrect diagonal bracing
  • A gate that is too heavy for its fittings
  • Ground movement
  • Swollen timber

  • Damaged drop bolts
  • Worn centre catches
  • Gates meeting unevenly
  • Ground sockets moving or filling with debris

Adjustable hinges

Use the threaded adjustment to raise, lower or move the gate sideways.

  1. Support or remove the gate.

  • The gate does not move excessively in the wind
  • Paired gates meet evenly
  • Drop bolts locate correctly

Open and close the gate several times.
