Popular Questions
Quick answers to some of the questions customers ask us most often.
How many fence panels do I need?
Measure the total length of the fence line and divide it by the width of the chosen panels. Most standard panels are approximately 1.83 metres wide, although exact sizes can vary. Allow for posts, gates, corners and any panel that may need cutting.
How many fence posts do I need?
For a straight run, you will normally need one more post than the number of panel spaces. For example, six panels usually require seven posts. Additional posts may be required for gates, corners and changes in direction.
Should I use timber or concrete posts?
Timber posts are lighter, easier to cut and often less expensive. Concrete posts are heavier but generally provide a longer-lasting, lower-maintenance installation. The best option depends on the fence type, ground conditions, budget and preferred appearance.
Do I need gravel boards?
Gravel boards protect fence panels from direct contact with soil and moisture. They can help extend the life of timber panels and make replacing damaged panels easier. Timber and concrete options are available.
Can you help calculate my materials?
Yes. Bring your measurements, photographs and a simple sketch into our Harlow store, or contact the team before ordering. We can help calculate panels, posts, gravel boards, post mix and fixings.
